Sliders Plot Holes

In Season 1 Episode 1, the sliders land on a planet  that has gone through an ecological disaster, possibly nuclear winter. They start out in Quinns basement and proceed to find and light candles to see and warm their way through the house as they try to make sense of the antarctic-like climate in San Francisco. The professor was also seen using a lighter. They walk out the front door of Quinn's house to find Rembrandt and his cadillac. They all sit inside the cadillac until a tornado comes their way. Quinn opens up a wormhole before the timer was ready and they slid to the next world.

What doesn't make sense: Why didn't they just take cover in Quinn's basement and wait on the timer for the next slide? It's common knowledge that basements are the safest place to be in a tornado. They also had the supplies to build a fire so they could've kept warm and had shelter from the harsh winds.

Plot Hole: Quinn had to help lift Wade, Rembrandt, and Professor Arturo for them to make it into the worm hole because it was high above Rembrandt's cadillac. How was Quinn able to make it through the worm hole with no help? He was standing on the car so he would have been unable to get a running start, and their was no one to lift him up as he did  for the others. Not to mention the snow and ice that had accumulated on the car would have made it slick.

In Season 4 Episode 8 "The Alternateville Horror", the sliders land on a world where the Chandler Hotel appears to be haunted. In actuality people are not seeing supernatural events, but rather people who are stuck on the astral plane. One of those people is Matthew, the young son of the hotel owner who only Colin can see. The others are doubles of Quinn, Rembrandt, and Maggie who are moving objects in the hotel in order to get people's attention.

Plot Hole: If Matthew and the doubles can move solid objects such as doors and chairs, then why are they unable to touch people (also solid matter)? Also, why isn't the hotel owner angry at the scientist who caused her son to disappear? Also, it is unclear whether the doubles and Matthew are able to eat food on the astral plane. If not, then it seems as though Matthew could have starved to death while stuck on the astral plane because it is implied that he disappeared a long time ago.
